Tiefling*
Bright green grass and blue skies, wood strapped together forming a boundary around the grass, this is what the young female Tiefling saw as she landed on the other side of the infernal gate. She had often wondered what it would look like to see the sun that her brothers had spoken of it was much brighter than she could have ever imagined. Remembering what her brothers had told her of this realm she raised her head so her curling round horns stood as tall as she could get them and strode with purpose towards the building in the distance, as she approached she could hear Laughter and singing much nicer that the screaming she had to listen to all her life so far, but how would they react to her if she entered. Her brothers had warned her to be cautious of these races, so she set up a camp a little way away from the building so she could watch the people here for a few days and judge how they reacted to new things first.
The Demon shouted at the large Orc coming toward Volo with his large sword drawn and ready to strike, Volo knew that words would not stop this attacker, although he did not really like to fight much he certainly knew how to avoid his attackers, he simply waited till the last minute and whipped his long tail around the orcs legs causing him to fall to the ground. The orc was infuriated by this but was also shocked when the demon just took a few steps away from him, standing up he went to swing at the demon again but the demon merely stepped to the side as if he could see the swing coming. This made the orc curious, so he said ‘Demon’ in a questioning tone. The sharp sprightly voice said back “no I’m not a demon, are you? I’m a Tiefling from the Shadow Realm my name Volo and I’m writing a book for my people back home describing this land would you be able to tell me more about you?“ even more curious about this strange creature the orc didn’t feel any sense of foreboding coming from the creature. He therefore took a few moments and decided to take him back to the hangmen’s rest, surely the inhabitants there would have seen one of these bright colourful creatures with strange eyes before.
Tieflings are derived from human bloodlines, and in the broadest possible sense, they still look human. However, their infernal heritage has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Born in a shadow realm of the Abyssal Plane Tieflings have large horns that take any of a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelle’s, and some spiral upward like an antelopes’ horns. They have thick tails, four to five feet long, which lash or coil around their legs when they get upset or nervous. Their canine teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes are solid colours—black, red, white, silver, or gold—with no visible sclera or pupil. Their skin tones cover the full range of colouration.
Many Tiefling’s however wish to escape the abyssal plane and live their own lives among those of the mortal realm. To be greeted with stares and whispers, to suffer violence and insult on the street, to see mistrust and fear in every eye: this is the lot of the Tiefling and to twist the knife, they know that this is because a pact struck generations ago infused the essence of powerful demons into their bloodline.
Their appearance and their nature are not their fault but the result of an ancient sin, for which they and their children and their children’s children will always be held accountable. As such Tiefling’s know that they have to make their own way in the world and that they have to be strong to survive. They are not quick to trust anyone who claims to be a friend, but when a Tiefling’s companions demonstrate that they trust him or her, the Tiefling learns to extend the same trust to them. And once a Tiefling gives someone loyalty, the Tiefling is a firm friend or ally for life.
